Holiday Blogging WLJ - Bonus Activity SAVE HECTOR'S DOLPHINS!

When ‘Whale Rider’ finishes, you and your tour group enjoy a delicious meal in downtown Nelson before heading back to your hotel. You need to go to bed early because you have to get up at 4:30 a.m. the next morning to travel back to Farewell Spit to see a group (pod) of Hector’s Dolphins. It is going to be an early morning!
Bonus Activity: Hector’s dolphins are a very special native animal found only in New Zealand. They are the smallest dolphin in the world measuring 1.5 metres long and they are quite rare. Sadly, many Hector’s dolphins are killed every year when they get caught in large fishing nets and can’t escape. Some people have argued that fishermen shouldn’t be allowed to fish in Farewell Spit in order to protect the dolphins living there. What do you think? On your blog, tell us whether you think that fishing in Farewell Spit should be banned (stopped).

Yes I agree! I think that fishing in Farewell spit should be BANNED! These poor animals are native to New Zealand and we don't want less native animals in New Zealand. What if they've just given born to a brand new dolphin and all of a sudden local people catch it and the dolphin is gone to soon! That would be really sad. We should look after our animals and keep our animals healthy! TO ALL FISHERMAN'S OUT THERE PLEASE DON'T FISH IN FAREWELL SPIT ANYMORE!!!!

  2. Hi Amelia (and Lillyana)!

I think that it's great to see you both chatting online about such an important issue, like protecting our endangered animals. It is a very serious issue and one that we need to be thinking about, particularly given the number of dolphins that are being killed every year. I hope that we can come up with a good solution to the problem that allows the fishermen to catch enough fish to feed their families and, at the same time, protects the dolphins habitat.

Well done girls. This is a really challenging topic and I'm so impressed to see you both contributing your ideas and joining in the discussion!
